Anodising vs. Powder Coating: Which Finish Is Better for Your Aluminium Application?

Choosing the right finish for aluminium parts depends on the final appearance, colour expectations, surface durability, corrosion resistance, and production requirements. Powder coating is often selected when broad decorative colour flexibility is the main priority. It creates a surface coating and offers a wide range of colour and aesthetic options. 
Anodising is better suited when the finish needs to become part of the aluminium surface. The anodic oxide layer forms from the aluminium itself, making anodising a strong option for applications where long-term appearance, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, and surface performance matter. 
When anodising is the preferred route, Pilot D-300 supports Type II sulfuric anodising through one-step integral, or Duranodic, colouring. How Pilot D-300 Supports Anodising 

Pilot D-300 is a 50% aqueous solution of 4-sulfophthalic acid containing small amounts of sulfuric acid. It is used as the primary component of the preferred electrolyte for producing hard anodic oxide coatings on aluminium and aluminium-based alloys. 
In Type II sulfuric anodising, Pilot D-300 supports one-step integral colouring, helping create metallic shades without organic dyes. The process can produce finishes in metallic grey, brownish grey, black, bronze, gold, and dark brown. 
Pilot D-300 suits anodising applications that require durable metallic colour, dye-free colouration, abrasion resistance, acid resistance, light fastness, and corrosion-inhibiting performance.

When to Choose Anodising with Pilot D-300

For aluminium applications where broad decorative colour flexibility is the main requirement, powder coating may be the preferred finish. 
For applications requiring an integrated anodised surface with durable bronze-to-dark metallic colour, Pilot D-300 supports anodising. It is especially relevant when the final part requires long-term appearance, surface durability, and resistance.
