What is a Release Coating?
Release coatings are applied to surfaces such as paper, plastic, and other films to produce a non-stick surface. The non-stick surface provided by these coatings allows adhesives and other sticky materials to be released from the film easily.
Where are Release Coatings Used?
Release coatings are primarily used in the manufacture of backing materials for tapes and labels but their usefulness extends to any application where unintentional adhesion is detrimental. In tape and label applications, release coatings allow for pressure sensitive adhesives to be easily released from the backing material without effecting the performance of the adhesive. In food packaging, release coatings are used to prevent sticky foods from aggressively adhering to the inside of a package.
SilForce™ UV Curable Release Coatings
The SilForce™ line of UV curable release coatings consists of base polymers, photo initiators, and release modifiers. These three components can be blended and adjusted to allow for fully customizable release performance. SilForce™ UV curable release coating systems offer a number of benefits including:
- Low temperature cure
- Atmospheric cure. No nitrogen required
- Compatible with non-inhibitive temperature sensitive substrates
- Developed for multi-roll coating
- Formulation flexibility
Formulating a UV Curable Release Coating with SilForce™
As mentioned above, SilForce™ Release Coatings offer excellent formulation flexibility and can be easily customized based on desired release properties. To begin, a base polymer should be selected that offers the proper release force for the intended pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA).
Next a photoinitiator should be selected based on the type of UV lamp that will be used to cure the release coating. No nitrogen inerting is necessary with the SilForce™ UV release coating system.
Based on application a tighter or smoother release may be desired. With the release modifiers below the feel of the release can be easily customized to meet specifications.
