The SI Group offers a range of products for various coating and paint applications including phenolic resins, antioxidants, intermediates, and solvents. As one of the world’s largest antioxidant and stabilizer technology providers, SI Group’s portfolio of phenolic resins provides excellent corrosion and chemical resistance in many industrial and electrical coating applications.

Phenolic resins are used in many high-performance coating applications, where industries need outstanding corrosion protection against most acids, solvents, and salts. Resins, pigments, solvents, additives, and intermediates make up the SI Group portfolio for coating formulations. Phenolic resins alone in surface coating formulations may face common occurrences like rigidity, low color stability, and requiring thermal curing. Combining phenolic resins with additional resins like epoxy, polyester, or alkyds, allows for greater adhesion in surface coatings as well as chemical resistance.

Coating technology is a very complex process that involves resins, pigments, solvents, and additives. Cross-linking phenolic resin with alkyds and epoxy resin allows for outstanding metal surface coatings with high adhesion and chemical resistance. This compatibility with various blends offers formulators the chance to strengthen the inherent brittle phenolic resin films for a wider commercial applications.

The SI Group's phenolic resin portfolio offers a variety of solid and liquid, reactive and non-reactive phenolic resins that provides the following property benefits:

  • Adhesion on difficult substrates
  • Compatibility with other resin systems
  • Flame retardancy
  • Dielectric capabilities
  • Chemical resistance
  • Thermal stability
  • Mechanical strength
  • Industrial anti-corrosion benefits

Phenolic resins are often used in combination with other materials as they require heat-curing and are often very rigid. But those blending capabilities offer outstanding benefits for coating formulators, and the following resols and novolacs are a great foundation for industrial coating applications.

SI Group Coating Additives

Phenolic resin coatings performance can further be improved by incorporating the SI Group portfolio of stabilizer additives. These thermally stable, non-volatile additives enhance the stability of the formulation during processing and curing while improving the longevity and service life of the phenolic resin coating.

SI Group Antioxidants

Antioxidants, when introduced to phenolic resin coatings, protect against oxidative degradation of polymers from heat exposure. These additives provide increased durability and performance for the phenolic resin coatings.

    Primary Antioxidants

Hindered phenolic radical scavengers that stabilize the phenolic resin coating over its service life.

    Secondary Antioxidants

Phosphite peroxide decomposers that stabilize the phenolic resin coating during processing and application.

    Antioxidant Blends

Offer synergistic effect of both primary and secondary antioxidants with less raw material (RM) to handle, non-dusting forms, and lower variability.

    •       Primary antioxidant

    •       Chemistry: Hindered phenolic

    •       Ease of handling

    •       Great compatibility and low migration

    •       Non-discoloring and low viscosity

    •       Low freezing (< -20 ℃)

    •       Secondary antioxidant

    •       Chemistry: Phosphite

    •       Liquid form for ease of handling

    •       Regulatory compliant and nonylphenol-free

    •       Higher phosphorus content than alternatives

    •       Used as TNPP drop in

SI Group UV Stabilizers

Photochemical reactions caused by absorbed UV light will degrade the phenolic resin coating over its lifetime. The SI Group offers high-performance, regenerative UV light stabilizers that prevent photo-oxidation.

    Ultra Violet Light Absorbers (UVAs)

Absorb the light at  a certain wavelength and dissipate into heat.

    Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS)

Scavenge radicals formed by interaction of light with the polymers.

    • UV Light Absorber (UVA)
    • Chemistry: 2-(2'-Hydroxy-3'-t-butyl-5'-methylphenyl)-5-chlorobenzotriazole
    • Outstanding light absorber that prevents oxidative yellowing and degradation

    • Protects unsaturated polyester coatings without discoloration
    • Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HAL)
    • Chemistry: Decanedioic acid, bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl) ester
