MOLYKOTE® Longterm 2/78 Grease is a high-performance mineral-oil-based grease for metal-to-metal components that see high loads, slow to moderately rapid movement, and harsh operating conditions. It combines a lithium or lithium/zinc soap thickener with molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) solid lubricants plus oxidation and corrosion inhibitors to deliver long-term protection. Designed for tie-rod linkages, axle rod linkages, ball joints, plain bearings, guides, splined shafts, and small gear units, it keeps critical chassis and machine joints moving freely instead of seizing or wearing out early. With an NLGI 2 consistency, base oil viscosity around 105–106 mm²/s at 40 °C, and a service range of roughly −35 °C to 130 °C, Longterm 2/78 handles cold starts and elevated operating temperatures without losing film strength. High load-carrying capability, good water resistance, and strong corrosion protection make it ideal for exposed automotive and mobile equipment hardware. It contains no intentional PTFE or PFAS, aligning with evolving OEM and regulatory expectations. If you are fighting noisy or loose joints, frequent re-greasing, or rusted linkages, MOLYKOTE® Longterm 2/78 is a strong candidate to review with a ChemPoint specialist.
MOLYKOTE® Longterm 2/78 Grease is formulated as a mineral-oil, lithium or lithium/zinc soap grease containing MoS₂ solid lubricants plus oxidation and corrosion inhibitors. The mineral base oil (≈105–106 mm²/s at 40 °C) and NLGI 2 consistency provide a robust lubricating film that supports high specific loads while remaining pumpable in standard grease guns and centralized lubrication systems. MoS₂ particles embed in surface asperities and provide a solid-lubricant backup layer that continues to protect even if grease is temporarily displaced, which is critical in mixed- and boundary-lubrication regimes.
The grease is designed for metal-to-metal friction contacts with high stresses and low to moderate speeds, particularly in automotive and mobile equipment such as tie-rod linkages, axle rod linkages, and ball joints. It is also recommended for plain and anti-friction bearings and other grease-lubricated machine elements such as guides, splined shafts, and small gear units operating at slow speeds. In these joints, oscillating motion, shock loads, contamination, and water ingress can quickly destroy standard multipurpose greases. Longterm 2/78 is built to stay in place, share load between MoS₂ and the oil film, and resist washout so the hardware continues to move smoothly.
With a service-temperature window of roughly −35 °C to 130 °C, the product covers cold starts in winter climates through continuous operation at elevated chassis and machine temperatures. Oxidation inhibitors extend grease life at temperature, while corrosion inhibitors protect steel and cast-iron surfaces in the presence of moisture and road splash. Good water resistance and washout performance help maintain film thickness on exposed joints, reducing the need for frequent re-lubrication. The formulation contains no intentional PTFE or PFAS, which helps OEMs and fleet operators align with tightening environmental and materials standards.
For automotive and off-highway designers, Longterm 2/78 can be specified as a factory-fill chassis and bearing grease where high load, contamination, and water exposure are expected. For MRO teams, it offers a single long-life grease for critical linkage points, slow-speed bearings, guides, and small gear units that need reliable metal-to-metal protection beyond what generic NLGI 2 chassis greases provide.
Premature wear or play in chassis joints such as tie-rod ends, axle rod linkages, and ball joints that see high loads and oscillating motion; MOLYKOTE® Longterm 2/78’s MoS₂-reinforced, high-viscosity film protects these metal-to-metal interfaces and helps maintain steering feel and alignment longer. Frequent re-greasing and downtime on slow-speed, high-load bearings, guides, and splined shafts in mobile equipment and industrial machinery; the grease’s long-term lubrication, oxidation resistance, and water washout performance extend service intervals and reduce maintenance touchpoints. • Corrosion and seizure of exposed linkage points in wet, dirty environments (road splash, wash bays, outdoor plant equipment); corrosion inhibitors and good water resistance help keep joints free-moving instead of rusted solid. Inadequate film strength from generic multipurpose greases in heavily loaded small gear units and plain bearings running at slow speeds; Longterm 2/78’s high base oil viscosity and MoS₂ solids improve load capacity and mixed-friction performance in these low-speed, high-torque drives. Concern over PFAS- or PTFE-containing greases in new designs; MOLYKOTE® Longterm 2/78 is formulated with no intentional PTFE or PFAS, helping engineers specify a high-load MoS₂ chassis and bearing grease that is aligned with emerging material restrictions.
