MOLYKOTE® PA-744 Anti-Friction Coating is a heat-cured dry-film lubricant designed for piston skirts and other highly loaded sliding metal surfaces in automotive and industrial equipment. It lays down a thin, bonded coating with graphite and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) solids in an organic resin system, providing reliable lubrication where conventional oils and greases struggle. On engine and compressor pistons, PA-744 helps cut scuffing during cold starts and run-in, when boundary lubrication is most severe. Its wide operating range from roughly −75 °C to 300 °C supports both low-temperature cranking and high-temperature ring and skirt zones without losing film integrity. Because it cures to a clean, dry coating, PA-744 is ideal wherever you need long-term lubrication without oil migration, dripping, or contamination. If you are trying to extend piston life, reduce engine or compressor noise, or protect metal surfaces under extreme loads, this anti-friction coating is a strong candidate to review with a ChemPoint specialist.
MOLYKOTE® PA-744 Anti-Friction Coating is a solvent-based, heat-hardening lubricant that uses an organic binder with a blend of graphite and MoS₂ solid lubricants to form a tightly adherent, charcoal-gray film on metal parts. Once applied by spray, dip, brush, or screen printing and cured around 180 °C, the coating bonds to the substrate and provides a controlled, low-friction surface that withstands high contact pressures, repeated cycling, and mixed lubrication regimes. This construction gives PA-744 its hallmark combination of extreme wear resistance, high load-carrying capacity, and long-term stability in harsh environments.
The product is targeted at piston skirts and similar sliding interfaces in automotive air-conditioning compressors, gasoline and diesel engines, and pistons in hydraulic and pneumatic pumps. In these applications, traditional hydrodynamic oil films can collapse during start-up, low-speed operation, or transient conditions, leading to metal-to-metal contact and scuffing. PA-744 helps bridge those critical moments by providing a solid lubricant backup layer that reduces friction and surface damage until full fluid-film lubrication is established. The coating also retains performance when exposed to motor oils, enabling it to work synergistically with engine and compressor fluids rather than being washed away.
With an operating window from about −75 °C to +300 °C, PA-744 covers everything from cold-climate cold starts through elevated ring belt temperatures in modern engines and compressors. Its dry, bonded nature makes it attractive in any design where grease or oil could migrate, burn off, attract dust, or create deposits, including piston skirts, rings, plain bearings, bushings, and sliding guides exposed to intermittent lubrication.
For OEMs and Tier suppliers seeking to improve NVH, extend component life, or manage friction in boundary-lubrication zones, MOLYKOTE® PA-744 offers a cataloged, production-ready option that can be specified as a screen-printable or spray-applied coating.
Piston skirt scuffing and ring land wear during cold starts and run-in that lead to early engine or compressor damage; PA-744’s bonded graphite/MoS₂ film provides emergency lubrication and reduces direct metal contact in these boundary conditions. Excessive mechanical noise from pistons and sliding metal surfaces that negatively affects NVH targets; PA-744 stabilizes friction and mitigates micro-seizing at the skirt–cylinder interface, helping reduce audible knock and rubbing sounds. Loss of protection when oil film thickness collapses in highly loaded or low-speed zones (top and bottom dead center, compressor reversals); the dry coating maintains a lubricious surface even when fluid lubrication is intermittent or marginal. Lubricant washout or dilution by motor oil in engine and compressor pistons, which can strip conventional coatings; PA-744 is formulated to resist motor oil attack, extending the life of the anti-friction film in oil-flooded environments. Contamination, oil migration, or sludge formation from greases and oils in tight clearances where cleanliness and controlled clearances are critical; PA-744’s dry, bonded film minimizes migration and dirt attraction while still providing long-term lubrication.
