These high-purity (98%) carboxymethylcellulose polymers perform essential functions, such as the following: dispersion of clay particles that occurs as a result of the polymer adsorption on the particles' surface; protection of the clay particles against the detrimental effects of electrolytes; retaining "free" water in the drilling fluid that could penetrate into the formation; preventing the swelling of shale formations and the dispersion of the shale in the drilling fluid.
