POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Resins

POLYOX™ Water Soluble Resins are nonionic poly ethylene oxide (PEO) polymers with molecular weights ranging from 100,000 to 8,000,000 depending on the grade.  Poly ethylene oxide (PEO) are thermoplastic polymers that are produced by the heterogeneous polymerization of ethylene oxide and are also occasionally referred to as poly ethylene glycol or poly oxyethylene. POLYOX™ PEO resins are commercially available as a white free flowing powder that is completely miscible with water.  The viscosity and rheological properties of solutions of POLYOX™ Water Soluble Resins varies based on the molecular weight of the resin and the concentration of the solution.  Solutions of poly ethylene oxide are typically viscoelastic with a pseudoplastic rheology.  High molecular weight grades of PEO produce solutions with a high degree of viscoelasticity as well as a high degree of pseudoplasticity.

The unique properties of POLYOX™ resins make them a useful material in a variety of industries including agriculture, ceramics, electrical, mining, paper, and printing.  As a binding resin, POLYOX™ Water Soluble Resins, will form a film that is soluble in water.  This is useful in water-soluble seed tape applications in addition to the manufacture of water-soluble packaging films.  High molecular weight grades of poly ethylene oxide have a high affinity for adsorption onto silica and clay based substrates.  This property makes PEO an excellent flocculant for water treatment applications and retention aid for paper manufacturing.  The pseudoplastic nature that PEO imparts to formulations makes it a useful additive for paints, coatings, and ceramics.
