METHOCEL™ F4M
METHOCEL™ F4M is a medium molecular weight hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener. At an addition level of 2%, it yields a viscosity of 4,000 cPs. It is widely used in ceramics processing, coatings, adhesives, and chemical processing.
METHOCEL™ F4M is a water-soluble HPMC polymer with low hydroxypropyl substitution and high methoxy content. It is naturally derived from cellulose and imbues thixotropic properties to water-based solutions. It is an excellent thickener, binder, and suspension aid for applications that require good lubricity and easy spreadability, such as coatings, inks, and adhesives. METHOCEL™ F4M has outstanding pH stability in both extremely acidic and alkaline environments, making it an ideal rheology modifier for cleaning products. METHOCEL™ F4M will reversibly gel at temperatures above 68°C, dramatically increasing green strength for ceramic extrusion applications.
Specifications
Methoxyl (%): 27.0–30.0 Hydroxypropoxyl (%): 4.0–7.5 Viscosity (2% in water at 20°C, cPs): 3,500–5,600
Primary Chemistry: Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)
Features & Benefits
Yields optimum performance at a lower concentration Can be added directly to aqueous systems No ionic charge Stable from pH 2 to 13 Reversible thermal gelation properties; gel goes back into solution upon cooling
Problems Solved
Sagging of paints and coatings on vertical and overhead surfaces Poor adhesion of cleaners to vertical or overhead surfaces Instability of coatings, inks, and adhesives containing suspensions or emulsions Unstable viscosity and poor green strength of ceramic slurries Friction and extrusion pressure of screw extruders used in ceramic extrusion Defects of screw extruded ceramics parts due to poor green strength Loss of viscosity at high temperatures Use of rheology modifiers that are not based on renewable resources like cellulose
Applications
Ceramics Coatings Inks Adhesives
