Hydroquinone and Derivatives for Paint

Reliable Solutions for Paint and Coatings Applications

Paint and coating manufacturers rely on high-performance stabilizers and inhibitors to maintain formulation integrity throughout all stages, from production to storage and use. Uncontrolled or undesired free radical reactions can lead to premature polymerization, viscosity changes, skin formation, and pH changes, impacting the stability, quality, and shelf life of products. Eastman hydroquinone and its derivatives provide effective solutions for maintaining formulation integrity by quenching free radicals and stabilizing monomers and polymers.

Eastman HQ, MTBHQ, and DTBHQ

As a world-class producer of hydroquinone and other intermediate products, Eastman produces a family of hydroquinone-based inhibitors designed to address uncontrolled polymerization and oxidative stability. Each product in the Eastman hydroquinone line delivers distinct performance characteristics that enable formulators to maintain the quality, stability, and shelf life of their paints and coatings. By offering products that prevent premature polymerization, inhibit unwanted chemical reactions during storage, and act as effective antiskinning agents, Eastman empowers manufacturers by ensuring their formulations remain reliable and easy to use throughout their lifecycle.

What Is Hydroquinone and Its Derivatives?

Hydroquinone (HQ) is an aromatic compound used as an intermediate, fast-acting inhibitor, and antioxidant in a variety of industrial systems and applications. As a dihydroxybenzene compound, hydroquinone reacts effectively with oxygen and peroxy free radicals to form stable compounds, thereby slowing oxidation and other unwanted chemical reactions. Derivatives of hydroquinone are formed by substituting hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring with an alkyl group or modifying the hydroxyl groups. Derivatives of hydroquinone can enhance certain properties, such as thermal stability, solubility, or storage performance. Because of this, inhibitors, or combinations of them, are selected based on formulation needs.

Applications in Paint and Coatings

Primary Inhibitor

In coating and paint applications, hydroquinone serves as an effective primary inhibitor for controlling free radical polymerization in resin systems. It reacts with oxygen and peroxide free radicals to prevent premature oxidation and undesired chain reactions.

Storage Inhibitor

Maintaining long-term stability is critical for paint and coating resins that may be stored and transported before use. As a multifunctional inhibitor, DTBHQ offers excellent inhibition and stabilization and can be used with other inhibitors as a storage inhibitor for unsaturated polyester systems. MTBHQ also offers excellent storage inhibition of unsaturated polyesters and is more effective at elevated temperatures due to its high solubility.

Antiskinning Agent

Hydroquinone derivatives are also valued for their use as antiskinning agents in paint, particularly alkyd-based coatings. These compounds work by inhibiting the formation of a hard surface layer, or skin, on the paint during storage, ensuring the product remains easy to apply and maintains a smooth finish. DTBHQ is excellent at preventing surface curing and in-can film formation, offering a reliable way to keep paints usable over time. When used in combination with oxygen barriers, drier adjustments, or oxygen-scavenging caps, formulators can further reduce the risk of in-can skinning and yellowing.

Safety, Handling, and Regulatory Guidance

Hydroquinone and its derivatives should be handled in accordance with applicable safety and handling regulations and manufacturer recommendations. Due to safety concerns, when hydroquinone is used at high concentrations or for prolonged periods, appropriate personal protective equipment and adequate ventilation should be used. Because inhibitor performance and handling requirements depend on concentration and formulation systems, manufacturers should consult the appropriate SDS and TDS documentation before use.
