Extend the Lifetime of Transformer Oil with Xtendra BHT
Transformer oils are critical to the long-term performance and reliability of industrial electrical power systems. As insulating fluids, transformer oils function as a dielectric medium and coolant for high-voltage systems. Over the lifetime of the electrical power systems, due to exposure to oxidation and thermal degradation, transformer oil can compromise performance and accelerate aging.
What Is Xtendra BHT?
Camlin Fine Sciences Xtendra BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is a hindered phenolic antioxidant additive with high purity and thermal stability that inhibits oxidative degradation in hydrocarbon-based systems.
Why Antioxidants Matter in Transformer Oil
In oilfield wet transformers, transformer oils are critical for insulating, suppressing corona discharge and arcing, and cooling the transformer. Oil-filled transformers are constantly exposed to extreme temperatures and oxygen over extended operational periods. Without antioxidant stabilization, this insulating oil’s exposure creates oxidative chain reactions forming acid, sludge, and peroxides that can result in electrical breakdown, insulation failure, and increased viscosity. Xtendra BHT breaks these oxidation chains prior to this transformation, allowing for reduced byproduct formation and extending the insulating oil’s lifetime performance.
Oxidative Stability
Inhibits the radical formation and propagation and protects base oils against thermal and oxidative stress
Extended Equipment Life
Reduces oil degradation to maintain dielectric strength and reduce stress on transformer components
Low Volatility
Remains effective at high operating temperatures without evaporative loss
High-Purity Standards
Meets ASTM D2668 Type I Antioxidant standard for transformer oils, as well as IEC 60296 and IEEE C57.106 guidelines for acceptable additives in insulating fluids
Compatibility
Blends well with standard mineral-based and synthetic transformer oil systems
Compatibility with Electrical Insulating Oils
