CELLOSIZE™ QP-300
CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 is a low molecular weight hydroxyethylcellulose polymer that is used as a steric stabilizer in emulsion polymerized latex.
CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 is a nonionic and water-soluble hydroxyethylcellulose polymer. It serves a variety of functions in water-based formulations. CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 can be grafted to acrylic and vinylic polymers in emulsion polymerization reactions to provide improved emulsion stability. When grafted to these growing polymers CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 Hydroxyethylcellulose binds to free water and creates a protective colloid around the growing latex polymer. This protective colloid provides a transitional layer between the latex and water and causes the emulsion to become remarkably stable. CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 is easy to disperse in water because it is surface treated to delay hydration. This allows for the polymer to be completely dispersed prior to hydration and prevents the formation of gel and lumps. Often times it is necessary to "kick-off" hydration by increasing the pH or temperature oft he dispersion. CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 Hydroxyethylcellulose will yield solutions with a viscosity of 300-400 cP when added to water at 2%. The molecular weight of the polymer is tightly controlled and is much more consistent batch to batch when compared to guar and xantham gum.

Problems Solved
Poor storage stability of latex emulsions due to a lack of steric stabilizers Difficulties targeting low viscosities with water based coating, ink, and adhesive formulations
CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 is a nonionic, water-soluble hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) polymer that forms a solution with approximately 300–400 cPs viscosity when added at 2%. Compared to other cellulosic rheology modifiers, it will be stable in solutions containing salts and between a pH of 3 and 10.
What applications is CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 used in?
CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 is most used in emulsion polymerization reactions, where it binds to free water and forms a protective colloid around the growing latex polymer. This creates a stable emulsion by acting as a transitional layer between latex and water. It is also an effective thickener in coating, cleaner, ink, and adhesive applications, where it helps reduce dripping and sagging when applied to vertical or overhead surfaces. It also helps stabilize suspended particles such as pigments in coating and ink formulations.
Why choose CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 over other CELLOSIZE™ grades?
CELLOSIZE™ QP-300 is the recommended grade for forming protective colloids in emulsion polymerization. It also forms solutions with lower viscosities than other CELLOSIZE™ grades and is thus recommended for formulations that require slight adjustments to viscosity or those that require long-term ingredient stabilization.
