METHOCEL™ K15MS is high molecular weight, surface treated, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener. It provides a viscosity of 15,000 cP at 2% in water. Hydration is delayed for easy dispersion.
METHOCEL™ K15MS is a surface-treated, HPMC thickening agent and rheology modifier with moderate hydroxypropyl substitution. METHOCEL™ is naturally derived from cellulose polymers and is nontoxic. METHOCEL™ K15MS has been treated with methyl chloride and propylene oxide to increase the substitution of cellulose with hydroxypropyl and methyoxyl groups. The "S" in the K15MS grade designation indicates that the polymer has been surface treated with cross-linked glyoxal. This allows METHOCEL™ K15MS powder to be easily and completely dispersed in water prior to hydration, which is usually triggered with a pH adjustment. Solutions of METHOCEL™ K15MS are thixotropic, extremely pH stable, and have moderate solvent compatibility.

METHOCEL™ K15MS is an ideal thickener for most coating, adhesive, and cleaner applications. METHOCEL™ K15MS will also reversibly gel at temperatures above 90°C and boost green strength to ceramics and adhesives. Surface-treated grades like METHOCEL™ K15MS are often used as thickeners in water-based architectural paints that also provide shear-thinning properties. They are easy to disperse, offer precise viscosity control, improve dried film durability, and increase shelf life. In addition, latex paints thickened with METHOCEL™ K15MS exhibit good spread, flow, and leveling.
METHOCEL™ K15MS provides delayed dissolution for adhesives, gel packs, and drilling fluids. It also can be used in asphalt emulsions and plastic injection processes.
