Scogin® IN2420 is a sodium alginate–based polymer naturally derived from seaweed. It is commonly used to thicken and gel water-based solutions used in industrial applications.
Scogin® IN2420 is a naturally derived alginate polymer that is sourced from sustainably managed brown seaweed farms. It is typically used as a binder, thickener, gelling agent, and stabilizer in water-based coating, ink, and adhesive formulations. As such, it is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel–based additives and binders traditionally used in these applications. When Scogin® IN2420 is added to water at 1 wt%, it creates a solution with a viscosity of 15–25 mPa·s. A medium-strength gel can also be formed by adding calcium to this solution.
Scogin® IN2420 may also be used in other applications, spanning paper and board manufacturing, bioplastics, water treatment, and active-ingredient encapsulation. Scogin® IN2420 has excellent film-forming properties, making it ideal for paper and board sizing and manufacturing paper coatings. This film-forming property also makes Scogin® IN2420 useful in bioplastics research and fabrication. When used for water treatment, Scogin® IN2420 functions as an effective flocculant, especially when used as a co-flocculant with metal-based flocculants. The long, linear molecular structure of the Scogin® IN2420 alginate also allows it to effectively entrap and encapsulate active ingredients in agricultural and industrial formulations.
