Superabsorbent polymers, commonly known as SAPs, are sodium polyacrylate–based polymers engineered to exhibit high absorption and gelling properties upon contact with liquids. By capturing free water and controlling moisture, SAPs help maintain product quality, extend temperature hold times, and prevent mess from melt or condensation. Absorbent polymers are excellent for use in various consumer and industrial applications and can retain extremely large amounts of water relative to their own mass. They are made by polymerizing acrylic acid and are neutralized with sodium or potassium salts, depending on the application.

Superabsorbent polymers can retain up to 1,000 times their weight in liquids and are widely used in applications requiring high water absorption, rapid solidification, and extended fluid retention. They are commonly used in a variety of everyday products, such as diapers, hot and cool packs, absorbent and incontinence pads, baby diapers, and feminine hygiene products. SAPs are also used in industrial applications, such as concrete, environmental remediation, and agriculture.

Superabsorbent polymers are classified as hydrogels due to their fluid-absorbing abilities through osmotic pressure and the formation of hydrogen bonds with water molecules. Sodium ions bind within the cross-linked structure of the acrylic acid polymer, resulting in osmotic pressure buildup that draws surrounding liquids into the polymer's particle core. Cross-linking prevents dissolution while allowing the polymer to swell into a stable hydrogel. The liquid continues to flow into the cross-linked polymeric structure until an equilibrium is reached between the polymer ions and the surrounding liquid. In summary, water diffuses into the polymer, ions equilibrate within the network, and the material swells. They are typically effective in aqueous and other polar systems but are not useful for the absorption of fuels and hydrocarbons.
