Superior Coil Coatings with Elvacite®

North American Coil Coatings

The North American coil coatings industry is estimated to be worth $1.5 billion and is projected to reach $2 billion by 2023.  This growth is mainly attributed to robust growth in the building & construction segment, growing demand from the automotive sector, and an increase in consumer spending on home appliances.  Coatings manufacturers should look to capitalize on the growth of the prepainted metal market by formulating coil coatings that boast outstanding appearance and superior durability.

Elvacite® Acrylic Resins have been used for decades as a component in metal finishes and lacquers as a film forming binder.  The same performance benefits seen when these materials are used in post-coating and touch-up operations can be utilized in pre-coating applications to form durable, corrosion resistant, and visually stunning coatings for metal coil.

Elvacite® Acrylic Resins for Coil Coatings

Elvacite® Acrylic Resins are solid bead polymers based on methacrylate chemistry that are soluble in many common solvents.  There are a variety of grades available specifically designed for use in metal coil coating applications.  Elvacite resins can be used in clear and pigmented coatings for a variety of metal surfaces including aluminum, bronze, steel, brass, and copper. When used as the binder component in metal coatings they provide a distinctive combination of durability, appearance, corrosion protection, and cost effectiveness.

Selecting the Proper Grade

Elvacite® grade selection for coil coatings ultimately depends on the performance required by the end use application.  While all grades of Elvacite® provide superior UV resistance, clarity, and gloss; there are some grades that are preferred for metal coating and coil coating applications.
Elvacite® 2014 and 2028 offer an outstanding balance of properties when used in general metal coatings.  When compared to competitive resins they provide superior protection of metals, especially bright metals like copper, to discoloration and corrosion caused by exposure to moisture and chemicals.  In applications where Elvacite® 2028 does not provide enough flexibility Elvacite® 2014 or Elvacite 2013 should be used.  In coil coating applications that require high gloss Elvacite® 2552 can provide even higher levels of gloss than 2028 and 2014.  When coating aluminum Elvacite® 4349 and 4345 are recommended.  Elvacite® 4349 has been specially formulated to adhere to untreated and unprimed aluminum while Elvacite® 4345 is a highly flexible resin that adheres well to most metals and provides excellent outdoor durability.
