Problems Solved
Without effective anti-wear additives, metal equipment, such as bearings and gears, is prone to wear and corrosion at high temperatures and under exposure to water ingress. Oil will also oxidize and degrade more quickly, leading to frequent oil changes. ZDDP is a commonly used anti-wear additive, but it can be challenging to find a ZDDP compound that balances fast activation and durability.

What is a ZDDP additive?
ZDDP, short for zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, is an organometallic compound composed primarily of zinc, phosphorus, and sulfur. It forms a protective, sacrificial layer on metal surfaces to prevent wear, corrosion, and oxidation.
What is the difference between primary and secondary ZDDP?
Primary ZDDP is comprised of primary alkyl groups in which the carbon attached to phosphorus has one alkyl group. In contrast, secondary ZDDP is comprised of secondary alkyl groups, and the carbon attached to phosphorus bears two alkyl groups. Primary ZDDP has higher thermal and oxidative stability but requires higher activation temperatures. Secondary ZDDP has a lower activation temperature and forms a film more quickly.
