Product Description
METHOCEL™ cellulose ethers are water-soluble polymers derived from cellulose. There are two different chemical types, methyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). METHOCEL™ polymers function as thickeners, binders, and film formers in water based formulations. Some grades of METHOCEL™ can also be used in binary organic and organic solvent / water systems. There are a wide variety of grades available ranging in hydroxypropyl content and molecular weight. It is possible by choosing the proper grade(s) of METHOCEL™ to achieve the optimum viscosity, rheology, moisture retention, and binding properties for a given formulation. METHOCEL™ cellulose ethers have some properties that other water soluble thickeners do not. METHOCEL™ can be reversibly gelled above certain temperatures to provide a controllable quick-set property. The gelation temperature is dependent on the hyrdoxypropyl content of the polymer and does vary from grade to grade. This rapid boost in viscosity is extremely important to formulators looking to increase green strength.
