SeaSpen^® GP379 is an iota-carrageenan polymer derived from red seaweed managed in sustainable Euchema spinosum farms. Solutions of SeaSpen^® GP379 are made by mixing it with other dry ingredients in the formulation plus a source of calcium, then slowly dispersing the dry mixture in rapidly agitated cold water. Following this, the dispersion should be heated above its solubility temperature (~80°C), and upon cooling, a weak gel will be produced. This makes SeaSpen^® GP379 an ideal gelling agent used in developing gel-based industrial formulations, such as insect baits and air fresheners. The gels that SeaSpen^® GP379 creates are resistant to freeze-thaw degradation and syneresis. Thus, SeaSpen^® GP379 produces creates gelled products with increased durability even in harsh weather conditions. SeaSpen^® GP379 is fully biodegradable, making it an ideal alternative to replace gelling additives derived from nonrenewable resources, such as fossil fuels.
