In the automotive sector, gasoline direct injection (GDI) has had a profound impact on fuel performance. GDI is now the prominent engine technology in new vehicles sold in the United States. Given the massive shift, the TOP TIER™ Approved Fuels program recognized the need for an update to address potential deposit issues in GDI engines.
 

TOP TIER+™ Gasoline and Diesel Performance Standards

TOP TIER+™ is a new gasoline and diesel fuel performance standard from the TOP TIER™ Approved Fuels program to address modern vehicle needs. These new standards are aligned with the commitment of TOP TIER™ Approved Fuels to deliver exceptional fuel performance and engine care.

 

New Gasoline Performance Requirements

The previous TOP TIER™ Detergent Gasoline Deposit Control Performance Standard set industry-leading cleanliness requirements for port fuel injected (PFI) engine intake valves and combustion chambers. 

This new TOP TIER+™ Approved Gasoline Performance Standard monitors emissions and combustion performance in gasoline direct-injected (GDI) engines. Two new test requirements were developed using a GM LHU engine: the first test measures injector fouling and particulate emissions to evaluate injector deposit control, and the second test analyzes protection against stochastic preignition (SPI), a preignition event in modern downsized engines that can lead to catastrophic engine failure. 
 

Updated Diesel Performance Requirements

The TOP TIER™ Diesel Fuel Performance Standard has been separated into two levels of performance requirements, TOP TIER™ and TOP TIER+™, to provide greater flexibility. 
 

The TOP TIER™ Approved Diesel Performance Standard has been changed to emphasize detergency and contamination cleanliness requirements, while the TOP TIER+™ Approved Diesel Performance Standard includes improved wear protection for fuel injection components and increased storage stability.

Fuel marketers have until 2027 to comply with these new standards, and consumer adoption is anticipated to start in late 2025.
