What Is Triethyl Phosphate?

TEP Liquid

Eastman is a global leader in the manufacture of intermediates for various markets, including high-purity triethyl phosphate (TEP). It is commonly used as a solvent, resin modifier, plasticizer, and agrochemical.

What Is TEP?

Chemical and Physical Properties

Triethyl phosphate is a colorless organic liquid with a mild, pleasant odor. It has the chemical formula (C2H5)3PO4 and CAS number 78-40-0. Its molecular structure consists of a phosphorus atom bonded to four oxygen atoms, one of which is double-bonded, and the remaining three are bonded to an ethyl group (C2H5). This molecular configuration gives TEP unique chemical properties that benefit various applications.

The compound has a typical boiling point of 215°C, a density of 1.12 g/cm³, and a molecular weight of 122.11 g/mol. TEP is miscible in water and soluble in a wide range of organic solvents, including benzene, ether, and alcohol, giving it wide application versatility.

Production Methods

TEP is produced through an esterification reaction between phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and ethanol (C2H5OH). One molecule of phosphoric acid reacts with three molecules of ethanol, forming triethyl phosphate and water as a byproduct. After the reaction is finished, several production steps are taken to separate and purify the compound.

Safety Profile

TEP has potential health risks and should be handled with care. It is considered a moderate health hazard, primarily through skin and eye contact. Long-term exposure can lead to irritation or other adverse effects. Safety measures, such as proper ventilation and personal protective equipment (PPE), are recommended when handling this substance.

How Is Triethyl Phosphate Used?

Solvent

TEP is used as a solvent in a wide range of chemical reactions, such as the extraction and purification of different compounds. Its ability to dissolve various organic materials makes it ideally suited in laboratory and industrial applications.

Plasticizer

TEP is commonly used as a plasticizer in plastics and polymers. By incorporating TEP into materials like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), manufacturers can enhance the flexibility and durability of their products while reducing brittleness.

Flame Retardant

TEP is known for its fire-resistant properties, making it a valuable additive in various materials, including coatings, textiles, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). It forms a protective layer that prevents the ignition and spread of fire, thereby improving the safety of products exposed to high temperatures.

Resin Modifier

In resin modification and production, TEP acts as a solvent and reactive diluent to dissolve polymeric materials, facilitate the curing process, and help resins achieve the desired mechanical properties and workability.

Pesticide Formulation

In agriculture, TEP is sometimes used in pesticide and herbicide formulations. Its unique properties improve the solubility and stability of active ingredients to enhance the efficacy of these agrochemicals.
