Methylamine Solvents Uses and Applications

Methylamines or alkylamines are colorless, polar organic solvents that are used in a variety of industrial and manufacturing applications.

ChemPoint offers methylamine-based solvents from Belle chemical, the only domestic producer of dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) in North America. Alkyl amine solvents are used alone or combined with other ingredients in water and solvent-based formulations. They are supplied in clear liquid form, have relatively low odor, and offer good stability at room temperature.

Dimethylformamide (DMF)

Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a powerful solvent compound (CAS No. 68-12-2) that can be used in various applications as an extraction compound, chemical reagent, or processing solvent in coatings, polymers, acrylics, and organic intermediates.

DMF (Dimethylformamide) Applications

  • Pharma and Medical:

DMF or N, N-Dimethylacetamide is utilized as a reagent or an intermediate in the synthesis of various Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). It is also used as a solvent in the synthesis of peptides and the production of in-vitro diagnostic devices (IVDs).

  • Agrochemicals and Chemical Intermediates:

DMF is implemented as an extraction solvent and a carrier in pesticides and agrochemicals. It is also an excellent solvent for purification and crystallization reactions.

  • Petrochemicals:

DMF can be an alternative to NMP in the extraction of butadiene, benzene, and other petrochemicals. It also works as a gas stabilizer when used in acetylene cylinders.

  • Paints and Coating:

DMF is used as a solvent in industrial coatings and epoxy inks. It is excellent for use in wiring and electronic coatings due to its high electric constant.

  • Textiles and Fabrics:

DMF is widely used in the production of polyurethane-coated fabrics such as artificial leathers, rain and protection wear, footwear, medical mattress covers, and surgical incise films.

  • Paint Strippers and Cleaners:

DMF is a great alternative for NMP and amine chemical compounds in paint strippers and industrial cleaners. It can be used as a solvent for cleaning residual raw materials off reactors and industrial pipelines.

DMAc (Dimethylacetamide) Applications

  • Agrochemicals and Chemical Intermediates:
DMAc organic compounds are widely used as a carrier and extraction solvent in the manufacturing of agrochemicals, including fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Pharmaceuticals:
Dimethylacetamide solvents are used in the production of antibiotics and novel contrast media.

  • Textiles and Fabrics:
DMAc is known for its use in the production of artificial fibers from acrylic polymers and polyurethane-polyurea copolymers. It also works as a polymerization solvent in textile spinning processes and the manufacturing of fine fibers such as:

    • Fiberglass/meta-aramid nonwoven (felt) fabrics, used for aerospace composites.
    • Surface tissue made of polyacrylonitrile, used in fiber-reinforced plastics.
    • Meta-aramid fibers for high-temperature systems such as hot gas filters.
    • Paper made from synthetic meta-aramid polymer used for insulation of electrical equipment such as liquid and dry transformers, motors, and generators, and structural composites.

  • Coatings and Cleaning Products:
DMAc is also an excellent solvent to utilize in industrial coatings and enamels used for electrical wire insulation. It is also used in paint strippers and industrial cleaning products in conjunction with other solvents.

  • Polyimide Films and Membranes:
Dimethylacetamides work as solvents for polyimide resins that are used in the production of dialysis membranes. It is also used in the manufacturing of polyimide films for use in consumer electronics, solar photovoltaic, windmills, aerospace, automotive, and industrial applications.
