MOLYKOTE® AS-880N Grease is a silicone oil, silica-thickened, light-consistency grease engineered specifically for noise control in disc brake systems. It is designed to be applied between brake pads and shims, and between metal/metal or metal/plastic interfaces, to reduce and prevent brake squeal without compromising clamp force. With a wide service-temperature range from -40 °C to 204 °C (-40 °F to 400 °F), it keeps performing from winter cold-soak through repeated high-energy stops. The silicone base resists washout, evaporation, and oxidation, while the silica thickener and solid lubricants create a thin, tenacious film that stays where you put it. AS-880N is compatible with common brake metals, shims, and many plastics, making it a safe choice for mixed-material pad and shim designs. It contains no intentional PTFE or PFAS, aligning with evolving OEM and regulatory requirements. For brake engineers and service teams chasing persistent squeal at the pad/shim interface, MOLYKOTE® AS-880N offers a purpose-built, high-temperature silicone shim grease worth reviewing with a ChemPoint braking specialist.
MOLYKOTE® AS-880N Grease is a silicone oil (siloxane) base thickened with silica and fortified with specially formulated solid lubricants. This chemistry delivers a light-consistency, NLGI Grade 2 grease (worked penetration ~280 mm/10) that spreads easily into a thin, uniform layer over shims and backing plates while maintaining adhesion under clamp force and vibration. The black color provides easy visual confirmation of coverage on the pad and shim surfaces during assembly or service.
AS-880N is explicitly designed for disc brake systems and is commonly applied between the brake pad and shim(s) to control NVH. By lubricating the metal/metal and metal/plastic contacts between pad backing plate, shims, and caliper hardware, it breaks up the stick–slip behavior that drives high-frequency squeal, while still transmitting braking forces effectively. The silicone base oil provides excellent thermal stability and oxidation resistance, allowing AS-880N to perform across a service-temperature range of -40 °C to 204 °C with a dropping point above 260 °C.
From a durability perspective, AS-880N is highly resistant to water and heat: bleed is around 0.1% and evaporation about 1.7% after 24 hours at 150 °C, helping the grease remain in place rather than bleeding out or drying up under sustained brake temperatures. Good water resistance means the thin film stays effective even when exposed to road spray, car washes, or humid conditions. The silicone/silica system also supports good plastic and rubber compatibility, making the grease suitable where shims or pad accessories include polymer components.
AS-880N has a typical usable life of 36 months in unopened containers at ambient storage. For OEM brake programs, it offers a cataloged, shim-focused silicone grease that fits easily into existing pad assembly lines. For the aftermarket, it gives technicians a high-temperature, brake-specific NVH grease that is purpose-built for pad/shim interfaces, rather than relying on general-purpose chassis or caliper greases in a role they were not designed to fill.
Persistent disc brake squeal caused by stick–slip between pad backing plates and shims - AS-880N is specifically designed to be applied between brake pads and shim(s) to break up stick–slip and damp vibration at the interface, reducing or eliminating high-frequency squeal without modifying pad friction material. NVH issues at metal/metal and metal/plastic interfaces in the brake stack that generic greases cannot address - The silicone/silica, solid-lubricant system targets the exact pad, shim, and hardware interfaces where many NVH problems originate, rather than relying on broad-purpose chassis greases that may migrate, burn off, or attack plastics. Loss of brake noise control after exposure to heat, water, or repeated braking - AS-880N’s wide temperature range, water resistance, and low bleed/evaporation help maintain a stable lubricating film at the pad/shim interface even after repeated heat cycles and road splash, extending the period between brake services. Concerns over PTFE- or PFAS-containing greases in new brake designs - By delivering brake-specific NVH performance with no intentional PTFE or PFAS, AS-880N helps OEMs and tier suppliers meet internal substance policies and external regulatory trends without sacrificing performance. Inconsistent application quality and rework on pad/shim lubrication steps - The black, light-consistency grease is easy to spread into a thin, controlled layer and is visually identifiable on the shim and backing plate, simplifying QA checks and reducing the risk of missed or uneven coverage in both OEM and service environments.
