MOLYKOTE® G-3407 Caliper Pin Grease is a synthetic PAG-based grease engineered specifically for floating brake caliper guide pins and other metal-to-metal brake hardware. It maintains low, consistent friction between the pin and bracket bore so the caliper can center freely instead of sticking, even under high braking temperatures and vibration. With a wide service-temperature range of -40 °C to 200 °C, G-3407 supports reliable performance from winter cold-soak to repeated high-energy stops. The lithium-complex thickener and anti-fretting package deliver excellent wear protection, corrosion resistance, and low bleed/evaporation at 150 °C, which helps keep lubricant where it belongs and off pads and rotors. Enhanced EPDM compatibility at 150 °C helps protect boots and sleeves from swelling or cracking, reducing contamination-driven failures. G-3407 is GM 9986340 approved and contains no intentional PTFE or PFAS, making it a strong choice for OEM platforms and service programs that need a severe-duty, regulatory-aligned caliper pin grease.
MOLYKOTE® G-3407 Caliper Pin Grease is a polyalkylene glycol (PAG)–based, lithium-complex–thickened synthetic grease developed for metal/metal lubrication in automotive brake caliper guide pins. The PAG base oil provides excellent thermal stability, low residue formation, and good lubricity at elevated temperatures typical of modern disc brakes. Thickened to an NLGI 2 consistency (260–310 penetration, unworked and worked), the grease forms a stable film that adheres to vertical and horizontal pin surfaces while remaining pumpable for manual or automated application.
In floating calipers, rapid micro-sliding between pin and bracket bore can generate fretting corrosion, increased sliding force, and eventual seizure. G-3407 is formulated to maintain low frictional force between these surfaces so very small movements do not translate into fretting damage. Caliper-pin fretting tests show it maintains lower friction than silicone/PTFE or silicone/MoS₂ greases in comparable conditions. This performance is supported by low bleed and evaporation (< 5% each at 150 °C), good water-washout resistance, and corrosion protection suited for road-salt and moisture exposure.
Thermally, G-3407 is rated for continuous service from -40 °C to 200 °C, with a dropping point above 250 °C. At low temperature, it maintains controlled torque so pins can still move in cold-soak conditions, reducing the risk of brake drag or uneven pad wear in winter operation. At high temperature, the combination of PAG oil and lithium-complex thickener resists softening, oxidation, and bleed so the grease stays in the pin/bore interface rather than migrating onto friction surfaces.
A key differentiator for G-3407 is its elastomer compatibility at elevated temperature. EPDM test pieces aged at 150 °C show limited volume and hardness change, indicating a formulation that is much less likely to swell or embrittle caliper boots and sleeves than generic greases. This is critical because boot failure often leads directly to contamination, corrosion, and seizure. The product is light green for easy visual identification, supplied primarily in 18 kg pails, and has a long unopened shelf life when stored correctly.
For OEMs and Tier suppliers, MOLYKOTE® G-3407 can be specified as the standard severe-duty caliper pin grease where GM 9986340 alignment, no intentional PTFE/PFAS, and high-temperature robustness are priorities. For MRO and service, it offers a purpose-built alternative to general chassis greases when seized pins, NVH complaints, or boot failures are driving warranty cost.
Seized or sticking caliper pins causing brake drag, uneven pad wear, or pull - G-3407’s high-temperature PAG base, lithium-complex thickener, and wide -40 °C to 200 °C range keep caliper pins sliding freely across harsh duty cycles, reducing drag and pad taper issues. Fretting corrosion on pins and bores from constant micro-movement - The grease is specifically designed to maintain low frictional force and deliver excellent anti-fretting performance so micro-sliding does not generate red rust, pits, or wear that lead to sticking. Boot swelling and failure due to elastomer-incompatible greases at elevated temperature - Enhanced EPDM compatibility at 150 °C helps maintain boot integrity, reducing the contamination and corrosion that follow seal damage in caliper hardware. Grease migration onto pads/rotors or loss of lubrication due to bleed, evaporation, and washout - Low bleed and evaporation at 150 °C, coupled with good water-washout resistance, help keep G-3407 in the pin/bore interface instead of on friction surfaces or washed away. Difficulty standardizing on a severe-duty caliper pin grease that meets performance and material-policy requirements - Because G-3407 is PAG-based, GM 9986340 approved, and contains no intentional PTFE/PFAS, it gives OEMs and fleets a single, globally applicable caliper pin grease that satisfies both engineering and compliance constraints.
