MOLYKOTE® G-5042 Silicone Automotive Service Grease is a purple, NLGI 1 silicone grease designed for long-term lubrication of metal/plastic and plastic/plastic interfaces across a very wide temperature range. It uses a siloxane base oil and lithium soap thickener to deliver excellent low-temperature performance down to -50 °C while staying stable up to 170 °C. G-5042 is compatible with many plastics and elastomers, making it a safe choice around EPDM boots, cable liners, and engineering plastics where mineral or PAO greases can cause swelling or cracking. Its low friction in steel-against-plastic contacts makes it ideal for starter motor overrun clutches, control cables, and wiper motor gears that must stay smooth and quiet over the life of the vehicle. The distinctive purple color allows quick visual confirmation of coverage on the line or in service. For engineers who need a plastic-safe, wide-temperature silicone service grease they can standardize across multiple automotive mechanisms, MOLYKOTE® G-5042 is a strong candidate to review with a ChemPoint specialist.
MOLYKOTE® G-5042 Silicone Automotive Service Grease is built on a siloxane (silicone) base oil thickened with lithium soap to an NLGI Grade 1 consistency. The silicone base oil provides inherently high thermal stability, very good oxidation resistance, and excellent low-temperature flow, while the lithium thickener gives the grease a soft, pumpable body that can be applied by brush, grease gun, automatic feed, or centralized lubrication systems. Typical worked penetration is 300–350 (60 strokes), and the base oil viscosity is around 100 mm²/s at 25 °C, providing a robust lubricating film for lightly to moderately loaded sliding and rolling contacts.
G-5042 is the choice for long-term lubrication of metal/plastic and plastic/plastic pairings over a service temperature range of -50 to 170 °C (-58 to 338 °F). It is recommended for a broad range of automotive mechanisms including starter motor overrun clutches, control cables, and windshield wiper motor gears, where smooth motion, low noise, and long life are critical and where components are often built from mixed metals, plastics, and elastomers. In these systems, conventional mineral-oil greases can stiffen at low temperatures, lose film at high temperatures, or damage plastic/ rubber components. G-5042, on the other hand, combines silicone chemistry and plastic compatibility to maintain a low-friction, low-torque film across seasonal extremes.
From a reliability standpoint, the grease offers low evaporation (≈1.8% at 150 °C / 24 h) and good corrosion protection (SKF Emcor corrosion ≤ 1), helping it stay in place and protect metal surfaces during extended service. The distinctive purple color makes it easy to visually detect after application, which is useful for QA checks on assembly lines and in service operations. G-5042 is supplied in pails and drums with a typical usable life of up to 60 months when stored correctly, supporting both OEM line-fill and aftermarket programs.
Cold-weather stiffening and high starting torque in mixed metal/plastic mechanisms such as starter motor overrun clutches, control cables, and wiper motor gears G-5042’s silicone base oil and excellent low-temperature properties keep friction low and motion smooth down to -50 °C, reducing effort, noise, and stick-slip during cold starts. Damage to plastics and elastomers caused by incompatible mineral or hydrocarbon greases - Because G-5042 is compatible with many plastics and elastomers, it reduces the risk of swelling, cracking, or softening in plastic housings, cable liners, and seals that are in continuous contact with the grease. Need for a single, plastic-safe automotive service grease that covers both interior and under-hood temperature extremes - The -50 to 170 °C service-temperature range allows engineers and maintenance teams to standardize on one silicone service grease across multiple mechanisms instead of juggling different products for cold and hot zones. Uncertain or inconsistent lubrication coverage in assembly and service operations - The distinctive purple color makes applied grease easy to see on parts, helping technicians verify coverage and thickness quickly and reducing the chance of missed lubrication points. Grease dry-out and loss of protection in long-life automotive mechanisms exposed to elevated temperatures - Low evaporation at 150 °C and good oxidation stability help G-5042 maintain a lubricating film over time, supporting longer service intervals and reducing noise or wear complaints in starter clutches, cables, and gear drives.
