METHOCEL™ 240 is a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) polymer. It is a water-soluble, high-purity, non-ionic cellulose ether that is typically used as a thickener in water-based formulations. METHOCEL™ 240 yields a high viscosity of 40,000 cP in water at a 2% addition rate. In addition to controlling viscosity, METHOCEL™ 240 is pseudoplastic and allows for control of the overall rheology of the formulation. METHOCEL™ 240 will reversibly gel at temperatures above 68°C. This combined with its shear thinning nature makes it an excellent binder for improving green strength in ceramic extrusion. Because of the hydroxypropyl substitution METHOCEL™ 240 does have moderate solvent tolerance and is stable in a wide pH range (2-13). METHOCEL™ 240 is useful as a thickener for cleaning solutions. It helps produce a stable viscosity while also improving soil anti-redeposition.
