Drywall, also called wallboard, plasterboard, and gypsum board, is a common building material made from a gypsum core and two layers of cardboard. Gypsum is a mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate. Drywall, or gypsum board, is often preferred over wet plaster on walls and ceilings due to its easy installation, stability, fire resistance, and quick repair. Drywall also provides a smooth and durable surface for painting.
However, drywall is susceptible to mold and mildew, especially in areas of excess moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens or leaky ceilings. Mold and mildew are types of fungi that exist in moist and humid environments. They can cause a range of health problems, such as respiratory issues, allergies, and skin irritation. In addition to health concerns, fungal growth in drywall can cause foul odors, stains, and deterioration, damaging the structural integrity of walls and ceilings. Oftentimes, fungal species already exist within the cardboard layers of drywall before the panels deliver to the construction site.
Adding effective dryfilm preservatives to the paper layer and gypsum core protects drywall panels during the entirety of their lifespan within people’s homes and prevents harmful exposure to indoor mold. Zinc PYRION® and Sodium PYRION® from Janssen PMP are effective preservatives based on pyrithione chemistry that protect drywall from fungal growth.
