Vazo™ 52 is an oil-soluble, azonitrile free radical initiator used in low-temperature polymerizations of resins and polymers.
Vazo™ 52 is a substituted azonitrile compound that decomposes when exposed to heat or light to form nitrogen gas and free radical intermediates. The free radicals generated by Vazo™ 52 are commonly used to initiate free radical polymerization reactions with vinyl monomers. Vazo™ 52 has the lowest decomposition temperature of the Vazo™ products and has a 10-hour half-life in solution at 52°C, making it an ideal initiator for low-temperature polymerization, halogenation, and oxidation reactions.
Polymerization initiated by the Vazo™ 52 initiator gives chemists more control of the reaction and final product than polymerizations initiated with other initiators, such as organic peroxides. This proves useful in producing specialty resins for applications in the transportation, water treatment, construction, electronics, medical, paper, textile, and personal care industries.
Vazo™ 52 may be used to polymerize several types of monomers, including acrylic and vinyl monomers, such as vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, acrylamide, and methyl methacrylate. To ensure safety and product quality, Vazo™ 52 requires storage at lower than 10°C due to the low decomposition temperature.

Generates free radicals at low temperatures
Produces nitrogen gas, useful as a blowing agent
Allows for more control of polymerization and final polymer structure
Safer than organic peroxide initiators
Not sensitive to pH
Will not undergo radical-induced decomposition that other types of initiators cause
Will not react with solvent, dyes, or redox-sensitive agents; fewer reaction conditions are required than other initiators
Compatible with a large variety of monomers
Initiation temperatures that are too high for the monomers used in polymerization
Branching, cross-linking, and viscosity increases that occur during polymerization
Polymer chain defects due to the use of initiators that abstract hydrogen from growing polymer chains
Difficulty setting up favorable polymerization reaction conditions to use free radical initiators effectively
