Scogin® LDH
Scogin® LDH is a low–molecular weight sodium alginate polymer derived from brown seaweed. It is used as a thickener and gelling agent in industrial applications.
Scogin® LDH is a biodegradable alginate polymer derived from sustainably managed seaweed farms. Scogin® LDH is valued as a naturally sourced binder for several industrial applications, including coatings, inks, and adhesives. In these applications, Scogin® LDH may also function as an additive to provide thickening, gelling, and stability. When added to water at 1 wt%, Scogin® LDH forms solutions with a viscosity of 50–70 mPa·s. If calcium is introduced to this solution, an alginate-based gel will form.
Scogin® LDH has utility in several other industrial applications, including paper and board manufacturing, encapsulation, and water treatment. In wastewater treatment applications, Scogin® LDH is useful as a flocculant, where flocs and sediments created with Scogin® LDH can be treated as organic waste and are less expensive to dispose of. Scogin® LDH has excellent film-forming properties. Therefore, it is also useful in paper and board manufacturing, where it can be used for paper sizing applications or to form specialty coatings with a low propensity for ignition. It may also be used as a raw material in bioplastic fabrication. Scogin® alginates, like Scogin® LDH, can also entrap or encapsulate particles, oils, and liquids, making them effective encapsulating agents for active ingredients used in agriculture and other industrial processes.
