Scogin® MV
Scogin® MV is a sodium alginate polymer naturally derived from seaweed. It is typically used as a thickener for aqueous solutions used in industrial applications.
Scogin® MV is a biodegradable sodium alginate–based polymer derived from brown seaweed sourced from sustainably managed farms. As it is naturally derived, Scogin® MV is an excellent replacement for fossil fuel–based additives and polymers used in several industrial applications.
Scogin® alginates, including Scogin® MV, are often used as thickeners, gelling agents, and stabilizing agents in coating, ink, and adhesive formulations. Within the textile industry, for example, Scogin® MV is valued as a thickener in screen printing inks, where it is inert to dyes and fibers and washes off easily. Alginates like Scogin® MV are also ideal raw materials for creating bioplastics.
When added to water at 1 wt%, Scogin® MV produces a solution with a viscosity of 350–500 mPa·s. Solutions of Scogin® MV can also be treated with calcium to form a medium-strength gel with vast temperature stability. Solutions of Scogin® MV are also film forming, offering benefits in applications such as paper sizing and coating. In addition, Scogin® MV exhibits encapsulating functionalities that make it useful in controlled-release applications for liquids, oils, and particles.
Naturally occurring, biodegradable polymer Stabilizes emulsions, dispersions, and suspensions Rheology modification Good solubility in both hot and cold water Gelation triggered by addition of calcium; no heat required Capable of forming either water-soluble or water-insoluble films Encapsulates active ingredients Powerful flocculant
Problems Solved
Low viscosity within coatings, inks, and adhesive formulations Instability of emulsions, dispersions, and suspensions Use of film-forming polymers that are synthetically derived
Applications
Textile print paste thickening Rheology modification within coatings, inks, and adhesives Stabilization of coating, ink, and adhesive formulations Encapsulation of active ingredients used in agricultural and industrial applications Bioplastics development Paper sizing and coating
