LOCTITE® 649
LOCTITE® 649 is a one-component, high-strength retaining compound with low viscosity designed for bonding cylindrical fitting parts where precision and durability are required.
LOCTITE® 649 is specially formulated for assemblies in which tight fitting metal parts must be secured reliably and permanently. The low viscosity allows it to fill small gaps while curing anaerobically when confined between metal surfaces. It provides high strength bonds to steel and passive metals, resisting vibration, fretting and thermal cycling. With a typical fixture time of 10 minutes on steel and operating temperature range from –55 °C up to +175 °C, this compound is suitable for demanding industrial applications where long-term reliability is essential.
Specifications
Colour: Green Viscosity: 550–950 mPa·s at 25 °C (Brookfield RVT, spindle 2, 20 rpm) Fixture time on steel: approximately 10 minutes Diametral clearance: < 0.10 mm Shear strength (steel): ≥ 15 N/mm² on steel pins and collars Service/operating temperature range: –55 °C to +175 °C Primary Chemistry:
Methacrylate ester
Features & Benefits
High strength ensures secure retention of components in service
Low viscosity allows thorough wetting of close-fitting parts
Absence of acrylic acid in formulation supports safer handling and avoids compatibility issues
Fluorescent under UV light for easy visual inspection of coverage
Anaerobic cure simplifies process as no mixing is required
Problems Solved
Prevents loosening, fretting or wear between cylindrical metal parts under load or vibration
Eliminates the need for mechanical locking devices such as keys or pins in certain assemblies
Attributes such as high temperature resistance and gap filling reduce risk of premature failure
Ensures repeatable performance in demanding industrial environments
Applications
Clean and dry both mating metal surfaces thoroughly for best results. Apply LOCTITE® 649 to one part before assembly. When the parts are fitted together and air is excluded, curing begins under anaerobic conditions. Ideal for securing bearings, bushings, gears, rotors and other cylindrical parts on shafts or in housings. For passive or plated metals where cure may be slower, use of a suitable activator may be recommended.
