METHOCEL™ 240S is a surface treated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose that is an easy to disperse rheology modifier for water-based paints and detergents.
METHOCEL™ 240S is a surface treated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener. It is a water-soluble, high-purity, non-ionic cellulose ether polymer. METHOCEL™ 240S yields a high viscosity of 40,000 cP at a 2% addition rate in water. Surface treated METHOCEL™ polymers are crosslinked with glyoxal. This allows for them to be easily dispersed prior to hydration. Hydration can be kicked off by adjusting the pH of the system to the alkaline range, typically about pH 9. METHOCEL™ 240S allows for complete control of viscosity and rheology. It is pseudoplastic so solutions containing METHOCEL™ 240S have excellent lubricity and can be easily applied while resisting sag. METHOCEL™ 240S will reversibly gel at temperatures above 68°C making it an excellent binder to improve green strength in ceramic extrusions. In addition METHOCEL™ 240S has excellent stability across a broad pH range (2-13). When used in cleaners and detergents METHOCEL™ 240S provides a stable viscosity and anti soil properties that improve the shelf life of the formulation as well as the performance.
Methoxyl: 27.0 - 30.0%
Hydroxypropyl: 4.0 - 7.5%

Viscosity, 2% in water, @20°C, calculated: 30,000 - 50,000 cP
Primary Chemistry: Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC)
Surface treated grade for easy dispersal prior to hydration
Hydration can be triggered by adjusting to pH 9
Results in a semi-firm gel texture
Reduce friction and provide lubricity for high solid applications
Superior binder for ceramics and high solid applications
Excellent pH stability (2-13)
Sag, creep, and drip of coatings, inks, and adhesives
Defects caused by low green strength
High extrusion pressure of ceramics
Difficulties hydrating HPMC properly
