HiTEC® 3301 shear-stable viscosity modifier provides viscosity control for automotive gear oil formulations. It is cheaper than PAO base oil in these applications.
HiTEC® 3301 premium, multifunctional viscosity modifier is ideally suited for formulating a range of automotive gear oils. The multipurpose additive is designed with a seal swell agent to prevent leaks. It provides excellent shear stability in a range of synthetic and mineral base oils to maintain the lubricant performance over long service intervals. This viscosity modifier is particularly engineered for applications with severe requirements for oxidation stability and filterability, especially where bright stocks or heavy neutrals are not enough. HiTEC® 3301 additive is also a cost-effective alternative to using high-viscosity polyalphaolefin (PAO) base oils in formulation. It is approved in SAE J2360 and API GL-5 gear oils with suitable base stocks.

Polyalphaolefin (PAO) oil is often formulated into automotive gear oil for demanding applications that require high oxidation stability and viscosity index, but synthetic oil can be costly, driving up the price of the finished lubricant. Without proper viscosity index improvers, automotive gear lubricants are prone to shear thinning, which negatively affects their life and performance. Gearbox seals that come in contact with gear oil are also susceptible to shrinking, causing oil leaks. This is particularly an issue with PAO-based gear oils since PAO oil tends to shrink elastomers.
