Solus™ 6450 is a cellulose-based polymer manufactured by Eastman used to formulate release coatings intended to transfer a layer of metal to paper packaging. These release coatings are used in a technique called transfer metallized packaging (TMP) to manufacture paper packaging with reflective or holographic appearances. Solus™ 6450 consists of approximately 40% bio content. The TMP technique reduces the need for films to be incorporated in the transfer of the metallized layer to packaging. Therefore, Solus™ 6450 is an ideal choice to use in formulations such as release coatings for TMP, which are intended to maximize sustainability.

Solus™ 6450 helps improve dry-to-touch times, provides excellent block resistance, and helps form tough films in release coatings. It is soluble in a variety of organic solvents, including some blends that are classified as VOC exempt. Relative to other Solus™ grades used in this application, Solus™ 6450 creates a solution with relatively high viscosity. The release coating made by Solus™ 6450 is printable with UV-curable inks and overprint varnishes, eliminating the need for the application of a primer.
