CAB-381-2 is a medium molecular weight mixed cellulose ester with moderate butyrate content. It is used as a film former, resin modifier, and additive in solvent-based inks and coatings.
CAB-381-2 is a cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) with moderate butyrate content and a higher than average molecular weight for the 381 series. The increased molecular weight of CAB-381-2 provides films with improved toughness over lower molecular weight CABs. CAB-381-2 is compatible with a broad range of solvents, resins, and plasticizers allowing formulators many options when optimizing a system. When used in coatings CAB-381-2 improves orientation of metallic pigments, increases gloss, increases UV stability, and decreases surface defects. As a binding resin in inks CAB-381-2 improves pigment dispersion, wetting, and UV stability. CAB-381-2 is also commonly used in nail care applications because it is more stable than other film-formers like nitrocellulose. When used as a film former in nail polish CAB-381-2 offers fast cure speed and excellent UV resistance. Nail polish formulations require fewer reapplications when utilizing CAB-381-2 as a film former.
