MAA (methyl acetoacetate) is a colorless liquid chemical used as a copromoter in unsaturated polyester resins and an intermediate for agricultural and pharmaceutical applications.
MAA (methyl acetoacetate) is a 99% pure, colorless liquid material used in various forms of chemical synthesis. Methyl acetoacetate is primarily intended to be utilized as a copromoter for synthesizing and modifying unsaturated polyester resins. During resin synthesis, acetoacetates have many desirable properties, such as improving adhesion to metal substrates, lowering the glass transition temperature, reducing solution viscosity, and the ability to cross-link with other polymers. Methyl acetoacetate also develops desirable hardness more rapidly than resins copromoted with DMA (dimethylaniline) at equivalent treat rates. In addition to resin applications, this product is widely used as a chemical intermediate for agricultural and pharmaceutical ingredients and as an intermediate chemical and stabilizer for fragrances. Methyl acetoacetate is soluble in water and common organic solvents.

Polyester resin manufacturers often solve for many issues, including a high glass transition temperature, slow cure time, or high solution viscosity. Solution viscosity is a more frequent issue as the desire for low-VOC, high-solids coatings increases. Formulators producing metal coatings often struggle with poor adhesion performance and finding suitable intermediate chemistries for their formulations. Yellowing is a common problem for many finished resins, especially during storage, and is of particular concern in gel coats or other color-sensitive applications. In fragrance production, many intermediate chemicals are unsuitable due to their unpleasant odor.
