METHOCEL™ K4M is a medium–molecular weight, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener. It will yield a viscosity of 4,000 cPs at 2% in water and is typically used in coatings, adhesives, and ceramics.
METHOCEL™ K4M is a naturally derived, cellulose-based thickener that is nontoxic and supplied in powder form. It has undergone chemical treatment with methyl chloride and propylene oxide to provide moderate hydroxypropyl substitution on the cellulose polymer backbone. Solutions containing METHOCEL™ K4M are thixotropic, easy to spread, and have good lubricity. METHOCEL™ K4M has excellent pH stability in both acidic and alkaline environments, making it a versatile rheology modifier that can be used in many different formulations.
Methoxyl (%): 19.0–24.0
Hydroxypropoxyl (%): 7.0–12.0
Viscosity, 2% in water @20°C (cPs): 3,500–5,600
Sodium chloride (% max): 2.0
Water soluble
No ionic charge
Wide pH stability (2–13)
Reversible thermal gelation
Excellent binder
Film-forming agent
Rheology modifier
Stabilizes liquid formulations
Ceramic defects caused by poor green strength of ram- and screw-extruded ceramic parts
Decrease in viscosity associated with temperature
Poor storage stability of acidic and alkaline cleaning products and detergents
Sagging and dripping of paints and coatings applied to vertical and overhead surfaces
Loss of viscosity with thickeners that are not stable in wide pH ranges
METHOCEL™ K4M is used as a thickening agent for coatings and adhesives and as a binder to improve green strength in ceramics. METHOCEL™ K4M in solution will reversibly gel at temperatures above 90°C; this lends to the improved green strength in ceramics applications. METHOCEL™ K4M is often used as a thickener in latex paints to control the viscosity and rheology of the formulation. In addition, it provides improved storage stability, flow, leveling, and film durability to architectural water-based paints and coatings.
METHOCEL™ K4M is used in a wide range of industrial applications, such as ceramics, cleaners, and coatings.
