In modern turbocharged gasoline direct injection engines, low-quality engine oils can result in several problems. These include carbon deposit buildup on pistons, impacting oil drain intervals and fuel economy. Pistons and valve seals are also prone to wear, resulting in oil contamination in the combustion chamber and excess oil consumption. Engine knocking or rattling is another common issue. The challenge for oil marketers is to find suitable additive technologies that can meet the most recent industry specifications, while optimizing formulations to lower costs and remain competitive.
