HiTEC® 5777 additive from Afton Chemical is a dispersant olefin copolymer viscosity index improver (OCP VII) that provides superior protection against soot buildup in gasoline and diesel engine oil formulations, resulting in a cleaner engine. It also demonstrates high shear stability to maintain performance across long oil-drain intervals, as well as good low-temperature properties to prevent thickening and gelling.

Without viscosity modifiers, engine oils would experience significant viscosity changes across different temperatures, affecting the oil's ability to protect critical engine components. Not all viscosity modifiers perform the same, though. Some polymers are more susceptible to shear, resulting in viscosity loss and reduced engine protection. Deposit and soot buildup is another common problem in engines, which can contaminate the oil, cause wear, and result in frequent oil drains. Sourcing multiple additives to solve these issues (instead of multifunctional solutions) can be cost-prohibitive and create unnecessary complexities for the supply chain.
