METHOCEL™ E4M Premium is a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener and rheology modifier with medium molecular weight. It yields a viscosity of 4,000 cPs at 2% in water.
METHOCEL™ E4M Premium is a water-soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (hypromellose) cellulose ether polymer with moderate hydroxypropyl substitution and high methoxy content. The hydroxypropyl content gives the E4M Premium grade compatibility with some common organic solvents. It is commonly used as a rheology and flow modifier, thickener, binder, film former, and suspension aid in various applications. Lubricity and spreadability within these applications may also be improved via thixotropic rheology that E4M Premium provides. METHOCEL™ E4M Premium also increases the adhesion and homogeneity of coating, ink, primer, and paint remover formulations.
METHOCEL™ E4M Premium has been used as a rheology modifier in many cleaning formulations due to its pH stability and solvent compatibility. Additionally, E4M Premium will reversibly gel at temperatures above 64° C and provide a boost in green strength for ceramics and adhesive applications. METHOCEL™ E4M Premium is highly efficient at improving formulation rheology, viscosity, and other properties at lower concentrations than other water-soluble polymer rheology modifiers.

Yields optimum thickening performance at a low concentration in formulations
Can be added directly to aqueous formulations
No ionic charge from polymer
Thermal gelation, gel goes back into solution upon cooling
Outstanding pH stability (2-13)
Non-aqueous solvent solubility
Insufficient flow and thickening properties in coating and ink formulations
Inability to form suspensions with formulation ingredients
Difficult application and spreading of adhesives, coatings, and sealants
Runny consistency of alcohol-based cleaner, sanitizer, and disinfectant formulations
Unstable rheology and viscosity at high temperatures and extreme pH
Defects in ceramic parts caused by poor green strength
