CELLOSIZE™ EP-09 Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a hydrocolloid-based emulsion stabilizer that is used to sterically stabilize latex emulsions and reduce the chance of coalescence of monomers during emulsion polymerization.
CELLOSIZE™ EP-09 Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a water-soluble, non-ionic, hydroxyethyl cellulose emulsion stabilizer with low molecular weight. It is typically used in emulsion polymerization of latexes. The low molecular weight and moderate hydration time make it an excellent steric stabilizer for water-based latex systems, where it forms a protective colloid around monomers during polymerization. CELLOSIZE™ EP-09 Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is grafted onto polymers during emulsion polymerization and will bind water to form a protective colloid around latex particles that are being created. This bound water acts as a transitional layer and provides stability to the colloidal system.
CELLOSIZE™ EP-09 Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is surface treated to delay the hydration of the polymer when added to water and ensure good dispersion. Hydration can be sped up by increasing the pH or temperature once the polymer is completely dispersed. CELLOSIZE EP-09 may also be used as a suspension aid for the polymerization of polystyrene. When used as a thickener and added to water at 5 wt%, it will yield solutions with a viscosity of 90–160 cPs.
