POLYOX™ WSR 205 is a nonionic poly(ethylene oxide) polymer typically used as a thickener, emollient, and film-forming resin in adhesive, personal care, and packaging applications.
POLYOX™ WSR 205 is a nonionic, water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) polymer with a molecular weight of 600,000 g/mol. This versatile polymer can be used as a film former, thickener, or emollient. When this resin is added to water at a 5% concentration, it forms a solution with a viscosity ranging from approximately 4,500–8,800 cPs. This makes it useful as a thickener in paint and coating applications to prevent dripping and sagging when applied to vertical or overhead surfaces.
Since all POLYOX™ water-soluble resins are also thermoplastic, POLYOX™ WSR 205 can be cast into a water-soluble film. These films can then be used to make packaging that is completely water soluble and useful for packing premeasured doses of hazardous chemicals like pesticides.
Additionally, solutions of POLYOX™ WSR 205 have outstanding wet tack but will dry to leave a nontacky residue. This makes it an ideal resin for tail tie adhesives for toilet paper and paper towels. Since POLYOX™ polymers remain soluble in water, the adhesive will redissolve easily into water, making them conducive to repulping processes.
When incorporated into creams, lotions, soaps, and shampoos, the POLYOX™ WSR 205 polymer builds viscosity while providing a soft feel and smoothness to the product as it is applied onto skin.
