LUDOX® HS-30 is a colloidal silica with an average particle size of 12 nm. It is a binder in casting and ceramics applications and a cobinder to increase abrasion resistance in latex paint and coatings.
LUDOX® HS-30 is a synthetic, anionic amorphous silica dispersion with a nominal particle size of 12 nm that contains 30% solids. HS-30 is characterized as a highly versatile binder or surface modifier that can be utilized across a variety of applications. As a binder, LUDOX® HS-30 is an optimal material for casting and ceramic applications. HS-30 can be used to bind to inorganic materials, including metals and oxides like aluminum, iron, and ceramic fibers. Incorporating LUDOX® HS-30 into ceramic slurries not only improves thermal and mechanical shock resistance but also minimizes defect rates for ceramic manufacturing.
For water-based coatings and adhesives, LUDOX® HS-30 can improve durability by improving cohesive strength. In certain formulations, HS-30 also shows adherence to a variety of substances, such as metal and glass. The colloidal silica particles in LUDOX® HS-30 surround polymer particles in water-based latex formulations and become an integral part of the latex film upon coalescence.
The anionic particles of LUDOX® HS-30 also make it an efficient flocculant for wastewater and papermaking applications when positively charged contaminants are present and need to be removed. Additionally, HS-30 proves to be a useful component in beverage fining applications, where food-grade versions of this colloidal silica are available for use.
