Elvacite™ TB-173 is a solid-bead acrylic polyol resin, containing a very high density of hydroxyl functional groups on the polymer backbone, with a hydroxyl number of 86 mg KOH per gram resin. This specification makes it unique amid the range of Elvacite™ resins, as this is among the highest of hydroxyl numbers. These functional groups are used to react with isocyanates to create ambient-cure polyurethanes. Elvacite™ TB-173 is soluble in a variety of solvents, including those which are classified by the U.S. EPA to be VOC exempt, such as t-butyl acetate, acetone, and PCTBF. Elvacite™ TB-173 is used in industrial coating applications with acrylic polyols and in automotive refinish coatings. In automotive refinish formulations, it enhances intercoat adhesion between the topcoat and basecoat. TB-173 forms films that are highly resistant to weathering, abrasion, moisture, yellowing due to UV exposure, and attack from dilute acids and bases.
